Sports Medicine Wellness Tips

Staying active, being proactive, and building healthy habits are key to preventing, reducing, or avoiding future joint pain. Here are some techniques you can use to help protect your joints while participating in sports and other activities:

  • Try a Foam Roller: Foam rollers, which can now be purchased at many locations, such as drug stores, can help improve your muscle flexibility and reduce pain. Ask your sports medicine doctor about the types of techniques you should use to help keep your joints and soft tissues healthy.
  • Strengthen Your Core: When you strengthen your core, it improves your posture. An improved posture, in turn, can help you avoid back pain. Find an abdominal workout that is designed to strengthen all areas of your core and, after you have built up strength, make sure to maintain your exercise program so you stay strong.
  • Keep Up Your Momentum: If you consider yourself an athlete or active person, chances are you take better care of your health than most. However, be careful that as you focus on excelling at your sport, you do so wisely. That means being aware of your joints and making sure you aren’t overdoing it and causing joint damage. While you might not feel the pain right now, it could appear later.
