“Although I live South of Tacoma, I was led to Dr Helpenstell by following the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Scores which show St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA, to consistantly be an "A" rated Hospital. Patient reviews led me to Olympia Orthpaedics and subsequently to Dr. Thomas Helpenstell. He has been excellent in every way that I could have wished. The total Left knee replacement surgery that he performed three months ago is the first major surgery that I have experienced so I was very nervous and concerned. From my first meeting, Dr. Helpensledd has been patient, thorough, empathetic, professional, reassuring and aware of my personal feeling. He was there before and immediately after my surgery, but to my relief he visited me the following morning in the hospital to check on my well being. What more can a patient ask for ? His immediate staff, Josh meyers, PA and surgery scheduler Lisa are likewise expellent. I found that Lisa was especially helpful to me with her through knowledge and genuine concern that I understood every concern that I expressed, above and beyond her job. Shortly after surgery I commenced two months of Physical Therapy at the Lacey, ROC, (Rapid Ortho Center). Lisa Bowlin, PT, has a very hard job, because Physical Therapy, especially right after surgery is brutal; However, she is remarkable in her ability to start slowly and throughly explain the process. Kelly, her helper, is another jewel. In total, the whole program for joint replacent that I participated in with Dr. Helpenstell (Oly Ortho) in conjunction with St. Peter Hospital is truly in the opinion of this patient an "A" program.”

“I had never met my doctor until that first visit. I just had called the clinic, told them what hurt and the made my appointment with him. I was extremely nervous because I was afraid I had hurt myself to the point of needing surgery. Dr Helpenstell was very pleasant and made me feel at ease from the second we met. I was no longer scared and really felt that he cared about me personally. Not just some annonamous person. It turned out that the pain I was having was nothing major. Just some arthritis from all the years of working my shoulder very hard. I would recommend anyone to go see Dr Helpenstell.”

“Initial visit with Olympia Orthopaedics and Dr Helpenstell was excellent. Was impressed by organization, expertise and professionalism of all staff, and was pleased with my experience with Dr Helpenstell as a competent and concerned provider.”

“First, and most important, the medical care was excellent (diagnostics and procedures). As busy as doctors are, I appreciate the fact that when you are being seen by Dr. Helpenstell or Josh Mayes you have their full, unrushed attention. Explaining procedures and probable outcomes is necessary, but I never felt surgery was being pushed or a decision rushed. X-ray, MRI, and office staff are friendly, patient, and helpful. Over all, I take my orthopedic concerns to Olympia Orthopedic with the greatest of confidence.”

“Dr. Helpenstell and I go back a way and except for the fact that he keeps cutting me open, I really like the guy; hey, I'm told scar tissue builds character. The good doctor has always treated me with the utmost respect including dealing with my petty phobia about cortisone. He is an absolute professional and always up-to-date on my medical history and concerns. His assistant is also very professional and together they make an excellent team which has taken very good care of my health concerns.”
– Dennis W.
“Easy to talk with, stayed on point, not confusing. Surgery appears to have been a success.”
– Susan C.
“Doctor Helpenstell was my surgeon. Josh was his assistant. Both are very good and talk language I can understand. As good as this knee is doing I am looking forward to doing the other one.”
– Kenneth W.
“Dr. Helpenstell has been my surgeon on three different occasions. Because the hip replacement went so well, I couldn't see changing doctors. I regularly let those at my church know that he is an excellent surgeon.”
– Karen D.
“Professional, comfortable, friendly, efficient, accurate.”
– Donna M.
“I received two cortisone shots, one in each knee, following an X-ray that indicated a continuing condition resulting from arthritis. As always Dr. Helpenstell was kind, concerned and professional in caring for me. We discussed the possibility of knee replacement surgery in the future.”
– Mary P.
“I had total knee replacement surgery. Having this type of surgery wasn't a pleasant experience at all but I made it through with no regrets. Dr. Helpenstell said I wouldnt regret it and he was right, I don't. My surgery was successful and I will one day need to get the other knee done as well. Dr. Helpenstell and staff were supportive and understanding of the pain I was in and after surgery were still there for me. I also had support managing my after surgery pain. I don't look forward to having surgery on my other knee but will contact Dr. Helpenstell when it is time.”

“Good doctor, I'm in good hands!”

“In the last two years I have had two surgeries with OOA. First Clyde Carpenter repaired my spine. Next Dr. Helpenstell replaced my total right hip. I am reporting on both: in each case I have had nothing but great experiences. Both have been as good as possible. They both have operated on me twice. Dr. Helpenstell first worked my right ankle in 1997. Dr. Carpenter first got me on the operating table in 2003. I most certainly would and have recommended both to others. If I ever required either one, I most certainly would try to get them on my case.”

“I had surgery & received a total knee replacement which has healed up nicely & without pain.”
– Lynn L.
“I am a anesthesia provider who has been doing anesthesia for total joints for 30+ years. So I know what I'm talking about when I say my total knee experience was GREAT! It was extremely professional throughout. I rarely used any pain meds post-op and didn't get sick (I usually do). You guys have things right! Again, thanks for a great experience and I recommend Olympia Orthopaedic Associates to all who I talk to.”
– William C.
“Dr. Helpenstell and his assistant, Joshua Mayes, were an excellent team. Both have a good sense of humor, which is important to me as I was in substantial pain from my decaying hips. Both also offered honest and reasonable advice. I especially appreciated the philosophy of making surgery the last treatment option.”
– Penny N.
“It was a follow-up visit, very short. Dr. Helpenstell is always courteous (even when I am not). Staff is efficient. Reception is efficient. Good care.”
– Sharon J.
“Scheduler was helpful!”

“Dr. Helpenstell and associates replaced my left hip and my right knee. The hip replacement is a blazing success but the right knee is still in the process of healing and I have a few uncomfortable moment. This will pass I am sure. The hospital staff at St. Pete's Hospital are some of the most amazing people I have ever met and if the need arises, that's where I want to go. I don't anticipate any further surgeries but I will recommend him and his staff and the hospital to anyone who asks. ”
