What is a hand therapist?

A hand therapist is a licensed occupational or physical therapist who has undergone extensive training to specialize in the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of hand and upper extremity injuries and conditions.

To receive a certified hand therapist designation (CHT), at least three years of experience in the therapy field and 4,000 hours of hand therapy practice, or upper extremity rehabilitation, are required. CHTs must also pass a certification exam and undergo continued education to renew their credentials every five years.
